In the first nine months of 2015, Intesa Sanpaolo’s figures reached record highs for the entire history of the group. It had the third largest market capitalization in the Eurozone and the biggest in Italy, at over €51 bn. Furthermore, it reinforced its standing in Italy, where it had the greatest market share in all of its sectors (retail, corporate and wealth management), with 11.1 mn customers and a network of approximately 4,300 branches throughout the country. Its operations as a retail bank stretch beyond the national borders thanks to a selective presence in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, with commercial banking subsidiaries in 12 countries that have approximately 1,300 branches and 8.2 mn customers altogether. In addition, it has a specialist international corporate client support network that covers 28 countries, including nations in the Middle East and North Africa, the Usa, Brazil, Russia, India and China.

One of the most outstanding parts of the group (whose Ceo is Carlo Messina) is the Corporate and Investment Banking division, which has exceptional profitability and has shown an impressive capacity for innovation even in the troubled recent years in the market. This is highlighted by the fact that in the first nine months of 2015 the division had an operating income of €2,363 mn (17% of the consolidated figure for the group), with net income of €1,036 mn (up by 10.3% on the same period in 2014): «Our division contributed to the growth in the group’s profitability once again in 2015», stated Gaetano Miccichè, the General Manager and the Head of the Corporate and Investment Banking Division. «Over more than eight years, we have shown that we are capable of consolidating our results: we are the top investment bank in the country and one of the leaders in Europe, thanks to a business model that is profitable and sustainable over time» and always revolves around the customers.

«After reorganizing the division and adopting a model that focuses on the main business sectors», he added, «in 2015 we bolstered our international network: operating branches in Istanbul, Sao Paulo and Warsaw, as well as new offices in Abu Dhabi and Washington and –in the coming months– Doha and Jakarta. As for the Italian market, we went to even greater efforts to get the greatest value out of our production chains and we took part in big infrastructure projects. We are aiming to play an ever larger role as a driver of initiatives in our country that are part of big strategic plans».

Banca IMI is part of the division and it is responsible for investment banking: in the first nine months of 2015, it had a consolidated net profit of €473 mn, which marked a 15% increase on the €411 mn in 2014. «2015 was certainly a very important, highly rewarding year for Banca IMI», said Mauro Micillo, the Ceo. «We are increasingly establishing ourselves as the chosen partner of companies that are aiming for development based on a global presence and vision, promoting a virtuous relationship over time between clients and stakeholders. We accompany our clients as they grow in Italy and international markets thanks to our networks, products and services. We provide access to capital markets, advisory services for big corporate transactions and customized financial products».
